NorthWestern Mental Health is the largest public mental health service in Victoria.
Our team of over 1,700 staff deliver a comprehensive range of hospital-based,
community and specialist mental health
services to young people, adults and the
elderly with serious mental illness.
We have a strong multidisciplinary
workforce primarily comprised of the
disciplines of medicine, nursing, occupational
therapy, clinical psychology and social work.
Consumer and carer consultants are
employed to provide advice and input to the
quality of care provided to people with mental
illness and their families. They are routinely
involved in staff selection processes and
strategic developments.

Our service provides crisis assessment and
treatment, rehabilitation, community-based
treatment, ongoing case management, acute
inpatient, residential and specialist services
and consultation and liaison with other health
care services.
We provide our services through four adult
Area Mental Health Services, a large Aged
Persons’ Mental Health service, and a youth
mental health service – Orygen Youth Health.
Several of our state-wide programs are
renowned for their innovative approaches to
service delivery and research. They include:
- Orygen Youth Health and its Research Centre
- Substance Use and Mental Illness Treatment Team (SUMITT)
- Secure Extended Care Rehabilitation Unit
- Neuropsychiatry and the Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre
- Eating Disorders Unit and the Centre of Excellence in Eating Disorders (CEED)
Staff are able to work in a wide variety of
areas and develop their range of skills with
the support of a highly networked team.
We have a solid association with Victoria’s
leading tertiary and research facilities.
Longstanding collaborations with The
University of Melbourne’s Department of
Psychiatry, School of Postgraduate Nursing
and the Department of Psychology play an
important role in teaching and research.
Partnerships with La Trobe University in
the disciplines of social work, psychology
and occupational therapy, and with Victoria
University in undergraduate nursing,
provide a variety of research and academic opportunities.
