The retirement of one of Latrobe RegionalHospital’s (LRH) five General Surgeons has created an opportunity for a General Surgeon with significant experience at senior level in a major public hospital to join the team of specialists at this purpose built 257-bed teaching hospital and fully integrated health care facility. 

Located in West Traralgon in the heart of Victoria’s picturesque LatrobeValley only 160 km from Melbourne by freeway or train, LRH is Gippsland’s designated regional specialist referral and trauma centre. It is being developed as the regional cancer service, providing medical and radiation oncology.  Opened 11 years ago, LRH is affiliated with MonashUniversity and accommodates the University’s GippslandMedicalSchool. It actively participates in undergraduate teaching and has accredited postgraduate positions in a number of disciplines.

 

LRH treats 27,860 inpatients, has 945 babies delivered and performs 7,200 surgical procedures a year. The Emergency Department has approximately 27,000 attendances a year, with a helicopter on site. The Hospital employs over 1,000 full-time equivalent staff.

 

LRH’s facilities include four operating theatres, incorporating day surgery facilities, and 30 general surgical beds. It has six intensive care beds with full ventilation facilities and four coronary care/high dependency beds. Comprehensive imaging facilities, including MRI, are available. The unit is supported by two general junior surgical teams, each consisting of a Registrar and an Intern. There are four Anaesthetists, a regular Locum Anaesthetist, an Anaesthetics Registrar and six GP Anaesthetists.

 

LRH’s General Surgeons undertake a broad range of general surgery, including upper and lower GI surgery. Subspecialty interests are encouraged, subject to credentialing and definition of scope of practice. Private and compensable patients may be treated at LRH and at Maryvale PrivateHospital, located approximately ten minutes away. LRH offers a range of options to help with the establishment of clinics, depending on the choice of employment arrangements. The current on-call roster is shared by LRH’s five General Surgeons.

 

The appointment may be on the basis of a full-time salaried position with limited rights to private practice, or as a Visiting Medical Officer on a fee-for-service arrangement with the availability of some income guarantee for the first 12 months. Initial accommodation can be arranged while you locate a home of your choice. Reasonable relocation expenses would be reimbursed.

 

You must have a primary medical qualification registered or registrable with the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria; Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (or postgraduate training, qualifications and experience in General Surgery assessed by the College as suitable for this position); and significant experience in General Surgery at senior level in a major public hospital.  

 

Together with other nearby population centres, Traralgon has a population of over 71,000. It offers quality living and education facilities; and a myriad of sporting and other recreational activities based on the mountains and ski fields to the north, beaches and Wilson’s Promontory to the south, boating on the Gippsland lakes to the east, and the heart of Melbourne a comfortable drive to the west on the Monash Freeway.
