CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER, Latrobe Regional Hospital, Traralgon, Victoria

  • One of Victoria's five major regional health service providers and centre for subspecialty services

  • Key leadership role in a large, complex organisation undergoing fundamental change

  • Located in picturesque Latrobe Valley, less than two hours from the centre of Melbourne
  • The current reorganisation of Latrobe Regional Hospital (LRH) has provided a rare opportunity for an energetic senior clinician, ideally with management experience in a complex healthcare organisation, to join the LRH executive management team as Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

Located in West Traralgon in the heart of Victoria’s picturesque Latrobe Valley, Latrobe Regional Hospital (LRH) is Gippsland’s designated regional specialist referral and trauma centre for a catchment population of more than 240,000. Opened 11 years ago as a purpose built 257-bed teaching hospital and fully integrated health care facility, LRH is being developed as the site for subspecialty services. Its regional cancer service already provides medical and radiation oncology.

LRH is affiliated with Monash University and accommodates the University’s Gippsland Medical School. It actively participates in undergraduate teaching and has accredited postgraduate positions in a number of disciplines.

LRH treats close to 28,000 inpatients, has 945 babies delivered and performs 7,200 surgical procedures a year. The Emergency Department has approximately 27,000 attendances a year, with a helicopter on site. The Hospital employs over 1,000 full-time equivalent staff.

LRH’s facilities include four operating theatres, incorporating day surgery facilities, 30 general surgical beds, a Level 2 nursery and designated paediatric beds. It has six intensive care beds with full ventilation facilities and four coronary care/high dependency beds. Comprehensive imaging facilities, including MRI, are available. Its VMO and staff specialists cover most fields. They are well supported by teams of Registrars and junior medical and well-trained nursing staff. The senior medical staff structure has dedicated Directors in some disciplines in recognition of their increased complexity and training requirements.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CMO will provide leadership to the Medical Services Division and, with other clinical Directors, develop a shared vision for patient care that recognizes the role of all health care professionals. The CMO will have primary responsibility for clinical governance, and work closely with other members of the clinical executive to develop and maintain systems that improve patient safety and minimize the risk of adverse outcomes.

The clinical governance function will include recruitment and retention of both specialist and junior medical staff, ensuring that systems for credentialing and defining scope of practice are in place, and education necessary to support competency is provided.

The CMO will provide the medical input to the service-planning process and advise the Chief Executive Officer on medical, medicolegal and industrial matters.

You must have a primary medical qualification registered or registrable with the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria; further qualifications in a discipline that would support successful performance in the role; a background as a senior clinician – ideally with management experience in a complex healthcare organisation; and a sound understanding of how healthcare delivery systems work, how multi-faceted organisations function and how professional groups behave within an organisational context.

The remuneration package will be commensurate with the responsibilities of the position. LRH will support ongoing professional development in areas identified as requiring increased knowledge or experience. Initial accommodation can be arranged while you locate a home of your choice. Reasonable relocation expenses would be reimbursed.

Together with other nearby population centres, Traralgon has a population of over 71,000. It offers quality living and education facilities; and a myriad of sporting and other recreational activities based on the mountains and ski fields to the north, beaches and Wilson’s Promontory to the south, boating on the Gippsland lakes to the east, and the heart of Melbourne a comfortable drive to the west on the Monash Freeway.
