The Garvan Institute of Medical Research was founded in 1963. Initially a research department of St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, it is now one of Australia's largest medical research institutions with approximately 400 scientists, students and support staff. Garvan’s main research programs are: Diabetes & Obesity, Cancer, Immunology & Inflammation, Osteoporosis, Neuroscience and Pituitary disease.

The Australian BioResources Facility (ABR), located near Moss Vale opened in 2008 as a high tech solution to the problem of housing expanding numbers of genetically modified mice needed in modern medical research. The ABR operates on a full cost recovery basis.
