Fairfax Digital is the online and mobile arm of Fairfax and operates commercial web sites for news and information (including smh.com.au, theage.com.au, brisbanetimes.com.au, WAToday and thevine.com.au) as well as transaction sites (including RSVP.com.au, stayz.com.au and trademe.co.nz).
The online classifieds sites (including mycareer.com.au, domain.com.au and drive.com.au) are fully integrated with print classifieds. Fairfax Digital supports the product development and operations of the classifieds sites while the overall responsibility for them, including sales and marketing, resides within the Melbourne and Sydney Publishing divisions.
The purpose of the Media Technology department is to make the Fairfax Digital Media sites the most visited and profitable sites in their category. To continue to develop and support the systems core to Fairfax Digital’s technology.
We are looking for a strong, mid level Web Developer to work with the latest technologies on some of the best-known and most visited web sites in the country.
The role will include working on our in house J2EE systems. You will have good experience with Java 5, Spring, Hibernate, SQL, object-oriented development, design patterns, automated testing and Test-Driven Development.
- Ideally, you will also have experience in Struts 2 (or WebWork), FreeMarker (or JSP), GWT, Tomcat, MS SQL Server, IntelliJ, mocking, refactoring and high-volume clustered web sites.
- It will be helpful if you have experience with Maven, Subversion (or CVS), Continuum, Linux, UML, design, Agile Software Development or the online media/publishing industry.
- You will have a passion for code quality, employing all best practises while still being able to deliver in a timely way. You will also have a passion for writing comprehensive automated unit and integration tests to facilitate agility and to ensure that you are building a seriously robust application.
- You will provide after hours support to internal customers on a rostered basis as well as working to resolve problems with deployed sites/systems.
- You will be a self-starter with good communication skills, as well as a team player with a strong sense of ownership. Ideally, you will be a creative thinker who can find simple solutions to interesting problems. It is also important that you are focused on delivering the right business solutions for our customers without getting carried away with technology for its own sake.
