At the Sydney Opera House, our guides take visitors on an emotional journey inside the world's most recognisable sails, engrossing them in a story to rival any opera plot with its dramatic twists and turns. They assist visitors to experience this miracle of architecture and engineering, a work of art that came into existence against impossible odds to become one of the busiest performing arts centres in the world.
Reporting to the Tourism Operations Supervisor, you will work as part of a dynamic and customer orientated front-line tourism team conducting a range of guided tours, including ‘The Essential Tour’ which is delivered with the assistance of audio-visual technology. This is a great opportunity to be involved in the delivery of tours and services in one of the world’s most iconic tourism landmarks and vibrant performing arts venues
SELECTION CRITERIA
1. The Tour Guide must be highly skilled in customer relations and service. The position requires a patient, respectful, and flexible approach to the different groups visiting the Sydney Opera House including a high volume of international visitors.
2. A physical challenge is presented by the unique design of the building, the nature of the work performed and the need to maintain a quality standard of service, a degree of physical fitness is essential.
3. Tour Guide’s are required to maintain a comprehensive and general working knowledge of the House and presenter products both to support tours and appropriately redirect queries beyond their expertise.
4. The Tour Guide is expected to undertake clerical and administrative duties to support the operation of the department; this includes monitoring ????? ????? resources for the Guided Tours office such as the brochure range.
5. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, must be articulate and have public speaking and presentation skills. A strong commitment to and skills in, customer service are essential.
6. Capacity to work unsupervised and as part of a team. A degree of creativity is required both practically and artistically, including the ability to improvise.
7. Time management, planning and organisational skills, including an ability to prioritise tasks and workloads on a daily basis, are essential
8. Promotional skills in order to promote SOH and presenting partner products, and other associated duties.
Due to the seasonal nature of the tourism operation we have periods of higher and lower activity, our high season being December through to February each year. As a result, we are recruiting seasonal casual positions with the majority of work available December 2009 through to February 2010. The position is covered by the SOH Enterprise Agreement 2006 and attracts an hourly rate of $29.80 per hour inclusive of standard shift penalties, and casual loading.

Successful applicants will be required to undergo extensive training early in December 2009 followed by buddy-shifts with experienced Tour Guides in mid December 2009.
