Design Assistant/Patternmaker

Petal Bridal is looking for a talented and charming person to work on a casual or part time basis in our couture bridal salon.

Specialising in fine silks and laces, we make non traditional gowns with a nod to old school glamour and a dash of modern catwalk. Our brides are relaxed and interested in a unique experience. Some dresses are designed specifically for the bride, others are modifications of our samples. All are made to fit like a glove and attention to detail is very important.

We need a person who could confidently take the measurements of a client and then do some of their fittings. This aspect of the job is very important as personality and a sense of fun, combined with a good eye for detail is what our studio is all about. You will need to be intuitive, a quick thinker and be able to answer any questions about the style, why it's fitting a certain way and most importantly - what to do about it. All the while making the client feel like she's having the time of her life.

You will need some experience in patternmaking. If you've worked in the industry doing patterns this would be an advantage as you will have to be able to make a pattern for the client and then adjust it after each fitting. You will need to be a quick learner as we have particular ways of doing things. Having some experience with makers will also come in handy as you will have to explain the details to them. And as you probably already know, there's no point having a great design idea if you can't effectively communicate it to all those involved.

You should also have a good sense of colour and design, proportion and fit. Some knowledge of the classics of fashion history would also be an asset. As far as fashion goes, it is imperative you have a taste for elegance and sophistication with a bit of contemporary sexiness thrown in. If this is you, then you'll be able to interpret our style and work within that.

It goes without saying that you should be trustworthy, reliable, honest and hardworking. But just in case, there it is! Being organised would be a great asset too, but if you're creative I know that's a big ask! If it's not your strongest point, we'll work on it together.

If you're studying at college or looking for an additional income, this could be an ideal position for you. At present the hours would be 10 - 20 per week, but this may increase if it is working well. Some hours may include evening work or Saturdays when required. We can negotiate this, as we could be flexible for the right person.

If this sounds like you, please send your details to ???@???.??? your introductory letter please include answers to the following:

* Which designer are you most impressed by?

* What is your strongest attribute?

* What has been your greatest success to date?

* Why do you want to work in bridal?

People who send generic letters without the above details will not be considered.

Best Wishes

Nina Field
