  • Visiting Medical Officer contract or salaried employment with opportunity for private practice

  • Strong group of locally resident and visiting specialists, with support from Registrar, HMOs and specialist nursing staff

  • Possible appointments at Melbourne teaching hospital, nearby private hospital and The University of Melbourne's Rural Clinical School
  • Goulburn Valley Health (GVH), incorporating the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital in Shepparton, is a 280-bed multi-campus facility providing a broad range of hospital and community-based health services to the region. Goulburn Valley Base Hospital is a modern teaching hospital affiliated with The University of Melbourne. It is the regional referral hospital for the Hume Region.

Servicing a sub-regional population of some 160,000, the Hospital is the designated referral centre and trauma service for central and northern Victoria. It has 210 acute beds, including an eight-bed critical care unit, and a 20-bed rehabilitation unit. Its facilities include three operating theatres, a day procedure unit, an endoscopy suite, a state of the art simulation centre and an excellent library. There is a well-equipped electrodiagnoistic unit, together with excellent medical imaging and pathology facilities on site. Last year GVH handled 25,000 admissions, 7,000 surgical procedures, 1,200 deliveries and more than 36,000 emergency presentations.

GVH’s senior medical staff includes five physicians, five general surgeons, six anaesthetists, five paediatricians, three obstetricians & gynaecologists, four orthopaedic surgeons and a urologist. All are resident locally. Further specialist support is available from visiting surgeons and physicians with a range of subspecialty interests. The medical oncologist will also be supported by registrar and HMO staff, as well as by specialist nursing and allied health staff.

GVH is affiliated with The University of Melbourne. The University’s Department of Rural Health, which takes fourth, fifth and sixth-year medical students, is co-located with the main Hospital campus.   GVH consultants and HMOs participate in the teaching of medical students.

GVH now wishes to recruit a suitably qualified medical oncologist to meet an expanding demand for oncology services.

The services are presently provided by a local physician supported by visiting oncologists from a Melbourne teaching hospital, but the clinical load exceeds this capability. The visiting oncologists would provide the appointee with some support and holiday leave relief. The appointee may be eligible for a joint appointment at a Melbourne teaching hospital, Shepparton Private Hospital and, subject to having suitable qualifications, to The University of Melbourne’s Rural Clinical School in Shepparton. The appointee would be expected to participate in GVH’s program of clinical teaching. The appointment would be full time, with the opportunity for private practice.

Applicants should have a primary medical qualification registered or registrable with the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria, Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (or postgraduate clinical training, qualifications and experience in oncology that would meet the College’s requirements for practising in this position) and appropriate experience at specialist level.   Remuneration is on a salaried employment or Visiting Medical Officer contract basis. Assistance with relocating and establishing a practice is available.

GV Health is the lead agency for the Hume Region Integrated Cancer Services. GV Health is currently planning the building of a Cancer Care and Research facility which will accommodate medical oncology day stay, multidisciplinary outpatient and research services. GV Health has an established Cancer Research Fund which is available to support approved cancer related research proposals.

Shepparton is a rapidly growing rural city and regional centre 180 km (two hours easy drive) north of Melbourne on a major highway. With more than 70,000 people, a vibrant business hub, a strong professional community and a warm, dry climate, Shepparton has a strong economy based on fruit growing, dairying and food processing. It has excellent sporting, cultural and retail facilities along with nearby regional attractions which include several wine growing regions, historic Murray River towns and the Victorian High Country and snowfields. It has a range of excellent private and public schools. Further information may be found on the GVH website at mycareer.com.au
