Bairnsdale Regional Health Service (BRHS) and Central Gippsland Health Service (CGHS) provide multi- disciplinary health services to Bairnsdale and East Gippsland, and to Sale and Central Gippsland, respectively. Their core services include delivery of acute hospital care, rehabilitation, aged care services, outpatient services, home based services and community health. Both Services are affiliated with Monash University for the teaching of medical students.
In recognition of their complementary clinical service needs, BRHS and CGHS have established a joint position of Specialist Physician to strengthen the present group of four Specialist Physicians based in Sale. The appointment will be a further step in the development of the two health services’ innovative partnership medical service delivery structure. The appointee could live in either Bairnsdale or Sale, depending upon personal or family preference.
BRHS incorporates a long-established hospital whose 92 beds include 16 sub-acute/rehabilitation beds, plus nine oncology chairs, six dialysis chairs, a well-equipped modern theatre suite consisting of two operating theatres and a day-procedure unit, and a new Emergency Department. Diagnostic facilities include a new CT scanner. In addition to medical and surgical services, BRHS attracts a range of visiting specialists, enabling it to provide a comprehensive spectrum of services across the continuum of care. It is well supported from Eastern Health, which rotates eight Interns every ten weeks to provide junior medical officers for the wards, theatre and Emergency Department. The Specialist General Physician would share patient care with the referring General Practitioners in a highly supportive framework.
CGHS’ modern facilities include a recently remodelled emergency department, a 27-bed acute medical unit and a six-bed critical care/coronary care unit with full ventilation facilities. Diagnostic services are excellent. They include pathology and medical imaging (radiology, ultrasound, CT scanning and nuclear medicine). The medical unit is supported by Interns and two Physician trainees on rotation from metropolitan Melbourne hospitals. CGHS’ group of four Physicians has a long tradition of providing specialist care to the 85,000 people in the Shire of Wellington and parts of South and East Gippsland. Other resident specialists include three General Surgeons, a Paediatrician (with two more being recruited), three Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, and an Anaesthetist supported by four GP Anaesthetists.
The four Physicians at CGHS practise as generalists with various subspecialty interests that presently include oncology, cardiology, infectious disease, gastroenterology, neurology, respiratory medicine and geriatrics. You would be expected to function as part of a one-in-four general receiving roster encompassing all aspects of acute general medicine. The development of other services such as echocardiography would be supported.
Monash University’s East Gippsland Regional Clinical School (EGRCS) is one of the School of Rural Health’s four regional clinical schools. These schools teach over 25% of Monash’s students in the clinical years three, four and five of the MBBS course. The academic program provided from the Sale region takes advantage of the Specialist services provided from CGHS. The services provided from Bairnsdale and further east have a strong community-based flavour. You would be expected to take up a part-time teaching appointment at EGRCS.
Your primary medical qualification should be registrable with the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria. Your specialist qualification should be Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or other postgraduate clinical training, qualification and experience in Internal Medicine that the College assesses as suitable for the position. Remuneration arrangements are flexible and can be structured to meet your preferences. Benefits include “salary packaging”, and conference and study leave.
