RN Div 1 - Cardiac Nursing Specialist Year Program

 

Temporary, full time opportunities exist in Geelong for Grade 2 nurses to explore the specialty area of cardiac nursing within a supported clinical environment.

Clinical support and assessment is undertaken by experienced cardiac nursing staff and/or Clinical Nurse Educator. The Clinical Nurse Educator will meet with the Specialist nurse on a regular, scheduled basis to review completion of clinical hurdles, review learning needs and clinical experience. A Preceptorship program is in place.

Clinical experience will focus on many areas within Cardiac services. The majority of the time will be spent in sub acute, with clinical rotations in Cardiac Catheter Laboratory and Cardiothoracic Step Down. To support the cardiothoracic rotation, a supernumerary day in cardiothoracic surgery will be allocated along with attendance at Cardiac Rehabilitation and Preoperative Clinic.

Clinical assessments comprise 50% of the program and include completion of clinical hurdle assessments; setting clinical objectives; and clinical progress appraisal. Appraisals will be conducted at regular intervals throughout the year.

The theoretical component includes study day attendance, an assignment and a presentation. The Centre for Education and Practice Development provides financial assistance for study day attendance.

The positions will commence on 8th February 2010. On successful completion of this 52-week program, a hospital certificate will be awarded and participants can apply for advanced standing toward tertiary study.
