RN Div 1 - Cancer Nursing Specialist Year Program

 

A temporary, full time opportunity exists for a Grade 2 nurse to explore the specialty area of cancer nursing within a supported clinical environment.

Clinical support and assessment is undertaken by experienced nursing staff and/or Clinical Nurse Educator. The Clinical Nurse Educator will meet with the Specialist nurse on a regular, scheduled basis to review completion of clinical hurdles, review learning needs and clinical experience. A Preceptorship program is in place.

Clinical experience will focus on developing knowledge and skills necessary to achieve a competent level in cancer nursing practice. The incumbent will be based in the Cancer Services Acute Unit (Birdsey Wing 6), with a clinical rotation organised in the radiotherapy day procedure unit at the Andrew Love Cancer Centre. Clinical assessments comprise 50% of the program and include completion of clinical hurdle assessments; setting clinical objectives; and clinical progress appraisal. Appraisals will be conducted at regular intervals throughout the year.

The theoretical component will enable the nurse to explore and develop a basic knowledge of cancer nursing. This component includes study day attendance, an assignment and a presentation. The Centre for Education and Practice Development provides financial assistance for study day attendance.

The position will commence in February 2010. On successful completion of this 52-week program, a hospital certificate will be awarded and participants can apply for advanced standing toward tertiary study.
