WELFARE RIGHTS SOLICITOR and/or CASEWORKER
The Commonwealth Government has recently provided further funding for the Welfare Rights Outreach Project associated with the Northern Territory Emergency Response. The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency is looking for a Welfare Rights Solicitor and/or Caseworker to further the aims of this project in the Katherine Region.
The successful applicant will provide legal advice/information and casework assistance to individuals in relation to Centrelink and income management; broader community legal education about Centrelink and the changes associated with income management; and capacity building for organizations on Centrelink and income management issues. The position also requires substantial input into NAAJA’s law and policy reform activities in relation to Welfare Rights issues.
We are seeking to recruit a lawyer with at least 2 years plus post-admission experience or a caseworker with strong experience in Welfare Rights or a related area.
The position will involve regular travel to remote communities throughout the Katherine region include Barunga, Beswick, Ngukurr, Kalkaringi, Lajamanu, Timber Creek and Borroloola. Both positions are to be based in NAAJA’s Katherine office, however, consideration will be given to basing the Solicitor position in NAAJA’s Darwin office.
The successful applicant will have a demonstrated empathy and sensitivity to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, history and culture.
