Organisational Environment
The position is part of the Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation at Deakin University. The Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation (CMFI) is a multidisciplinary research group with over 100 research students and staff. The Centre is a research intensive unit within the Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (ITRI). ITRI has an outstanding track record in winning national competitive grants and are members of four Cooperative Research Centres and two ARC Centres of Excellence.
The core expertise of the Centre lies in metals and light metals, fibres and fibrous materials, composites and polymers, bio and nano materials. Research in the Centre is supported by advanced modelling, pilot scale processing and state-of-the-art characterisation facilities. CMFI has close working relationships with both local and international companies and research institutions in relevant areas.
The appointee will be actively involved in research on developing materials and technologies for reduction and prevention of photoyellowing of wool fibres supported by the Sheep CRC.
Principal Accountabilities
The appointee is responsible for:
- Developing ways of protecting wool fibres and substrates from UV degradation, via surface coating and/or other suitable means.
- Assisting with preparation of project progress reports.
- Contributing to building an active [national and international] research record, including publication and the generation of external research income.
- Participating with colleagues in developing and maintaining links and partnerships with industry and the wider community.
- Supervising junior researchers.
- Undertaking appropriate administrative tasks.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Research
- Plan and supervise research activities.
- Conduct research and produce scholarly publication.
- Lead project activities under limited supervision.
- Contribute to the Institute and University’s research activity and national profile.
Service
- Participate in the development and maintenance of links and partnerships with industry and relevant professional bodies and the community.
- Perform administrative tasks commensurate with position responsibilities and contribute to processes that enable the effective operation of the Centre/Institute.
- Attend appropriate staff development courses as the need arises and participate in the University's Performance Planning and Review program.
Occupational Health and Safety
- Comply with occupational health and safety policies and procedures as developed by Deakin University in accordance with current legislation.
