The position is located within the School of Medicine, one of five Schools in the Faculty of Health, Medicine, Nursing and Behavioural Sciences. The School of Medicine offers a graduate-entry Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery program of four years duration, with a strong emphasis on practical skills, chronic disease prevention and management, and multidisciplinary teamwork. The course engages strongly with general and specialist medical practitioners, and also with public and private hospitals and health services in Western Victoria and the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, which will contribute to teaching and learning through a network of clinical placements. The Deakin medical course has been accredited until December 2013 by the Australian Medical Council. Its first cohort of 120 students commenced Year 1, the first of two pre-clinical years, at Deakin’s Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds in February 2008.
Principal Accountabilities
The appointee is responsible for:
- Teaching clinical skills to Year 3 and 4 medical students attached to the Geelong Clinical School;
- Day-to-day operation of the Clinical Skills Teaching Laboratory at the Clinical School;
- Assisting with the recruitment and training of clinical teachers and evaluation of the quality of teaching;
- Assisting with the development, organisation and analysis of clinical skills assessment;
- Promoting and facilitating the use of the Clinical Skills Teaching Laboratory to health professionals based at Barwon Health and outside the University and health service;
- Contributing to research, including publication and the generation of external research income;
- Undertaking appropriate administrative tasks.
Typical Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Teaching and Learning
- Assist in the development and planning of the Years 3 and 4 clinical skills curriculum at the Geelong Clinical School, ensuring ????? ????? the University’s mission and core commitments;
- Oversee delivery of the Years 3 and 4 clinical skills curriculum at Geelong Clinical School;
- Contribute to the teaching of clinical skills, including procedural skills;
- Assist with the recruitment, training and evaluation of clinical skills teachers;
- Assist with the organisation and evaluation of clinical skills assessment in compliance with the University’s and Faculty’s quality assurance principles and procedures;
- Provide advice and support for students. .
Research
- Make a contribution to research and scholarly publication;
- Participate in the development and implementation of collaborative research projects.
Service
- Coordinate the day-to-day running of the Clinical Skills Teaching Laboratory (administration and timetabling, recruitment of and liaison with tutors, ordering ????? ????? of equipment, preparation of materials, and promotion to health professionals outside the health service and University);
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with medical, nursing and allied health staff at clinical teaching sites affiliated with the Clinical School;
- Perform administrative tasks, including participation in Clinical School, health service, School and/or Faculty committees as required;
- Attend appropriate staff development courses as the need arises and participate in the University's Performance Planning and Review program;
- Ensure compliance of areas of responsibility with all legislative requirements and University policies including equity and equal opportunity;
- Carry out other duties as directed by the Dean, Head of School or Director of Clinical Studies.
Occupational Health and Safety
