The position of Associate Lecturer in Medical Education (Curriculum) is located within the School of Medicine, one of five Schools in the Faculty of Health, Medicine, Nursing and Behavioural Sciences. Staff within the School report to the Dean through the Head of School. The School of Medicine offers a graduate-entry Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery program of four years duration, with a strong emphasis on procedural skills, chronic disease prevention and management, and multidisciplinary teamwork. The course will engage strongly with general and specialist medical practices as well as public and private hospitals and health services in Western Victoria and the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, which will contribute to teaching and learning through a network of clinical placements. The Deakin medical course has been accredited until December 2013 by the Australian Medical Council. The first cohort of 120 students commenced Year 1 in February 2008.
Principal Accountabilities
The appointee is responsible for assisting with the development, delivery, evaluation and revision of the online curriculum in the Deakin Medical School by:
- Assisting in the development and implementation of the online learning environment and delivery of online curriculum materials for all years of the medical course;
- Assisting in the provision of advice to School staff on the most effective use of online technologies;
- Assisting in the development and provision of professional development in online teaching and learning and use of online learning technologies for teaching staff;
- Developing an active research record in publication and assisting in the generation of external research income;
- Assisting senior colleagues in developing and maintaining links and partnerships with relevant educational and professional bodies;
- Undertaking appropriate administrative tasks as requested.
Typical Duties
The appointee will be required to assist in the development and delivery of all online curriculum material in the medical course. With the support and guidance of more senior academic staff the appointee is expected to develop expertise and make a contribution to the School’s teaching and course development, and research in the area of online learning.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Teaching and Learning
- Work closely with the School of Medicine e-Learning Coordinator to assist in the development and implementation of the online learning curriculum across all four years of the medical course;
- Assist in the provision of advice on online learning strategies and effective use of online learning technologies within the School of Medicine;
- Assist in the development and delivery of staff development programs in online learning approaches and online learning technologies;
- Under the direction of the School of Medicine e-Learning Coordinator, liaise with Year, Topic, Theme and Clinical Rotation coordinators and Directors of Clinical Studies to ensure effective and timely delivery of the online curriculum;
- Under the direction of the School of Medicine e-Learning Coordinator, liaise with Knowledge Media Division in the development of online curriculum materials for the medical course;
- Assist in the provision of information and training to students in their use of the online learning environment for the medical course;
- Assist in the preparation of reports on the use of online learning technologies in the medical course.
Research
- Work with colleagues in conducting research and scholarly publication.
Service
- Assist in the development and maintenance of links and partnerships with health services and with relevant educational and professional organisations;
- Perform administrative tasks commensurate with position responsibilities and contribute to processes that enable the effective operation of the School;
- Attend appropriate staff development courses as the need arises and participate in the University's Performance Planning and Review program;
- Carry out other duties as directed by the Dean or Head of School.
Occupational Health and Safety
