The State Transit Authority of NSW is the largest provider of public bus services in Australia, carrying more than 640,000 passengers per business day. It operatoes under the brand names of Sydney Buses and Newcastle Buses and Ferries.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Drive a range of buses with modern communications and security features along specified routes and according to timetable.

  • Ensure the care, safety and comfort of customers.

  • Collect customer fares, check tickets and travel passes.

  • Write and submit operational reports to the depot management.

  • Account for fare takings and complete financial documentation.

  • Ensure that buses and other equipment are treated with care.

The Selection Process Includes the following assessments:


  • Review of written application and RTA driving history.

  • An ability test.

  • Work and driving related surveys\questionnaires.

  • Interview.

  • Reference checks.

  • Police checks.

  • Medical (including a drug and alcohol test) because this position is classified by law as a Transport Safety Worker.

  • Practical assessment  - if your height is under 167 cm or above 185 cm or you weigh over 110 kilos.  The practical assessment confirms you can sit in the driver's seat and safely operate the pedals and steering wheel.

  • If you were employed previously as a Bus Operator with State Transit, your employee file will also be reviewed to determine your suitability for employment.

The Training


 


Training consists of comprehensive on and off the job training, tailored to suite your experience and individual needs and if successful, leads to the award of certificate III in Transport & Logistics (Road Transport).  The first 4 to 5 weeks of employment is spent in intensive training with Bus Operator Trainers including


  • Head office induction.

  • Up to 2 weeks of practical driver training to assist you in obtaining your Medium Rigid licence or refresh your bus driving skills.

  • A week of in-service on the job training driving buses over a variety of routes.

After this intensive training, new Bus Operators work a trainee roster for a number of weeks to gradually build up their knowledge of routes operated by the depot.

Throughout the 2 year traineeship, new Bus Operators are required to attend paid training and assessments to complete all the units of competencies for Certificate III Transport and Logistics (Road Transport).


 
Job Notes:
  • Earn up to $55,000 p.a. with some overtime.  Normal hours of work are 38 hours per week.

  • Good hourly rate starting at $20.72 per hour and increasing to $22.28 per hour after 12 months. 15% loading applies to hours worked prior to 7 am; between 5 pm to 8 pm; and for all hours of a shift finishing after 8 pm.  For more information about the penalties relating to broken shifts and overtime visit www.betterbenefits.com.au.

  • 9% superannuation contribution plus option to salary sacrifice.

  • Five weeks annual leave (shift workers) with 20% loading and option to purchase additional annual leave.

  • One accumulated day off (ADO) each 4 week roster.

  • Free travel on Sydney Buses and some of the government rail services

  • 2 months (pro rata) long service leave after 10 years service with additional 2 weeks long service leave for each additional year of service after 10 years.

  • On successful completion of the traineeship employees are also eligible to apply for adult apprenticeships or study assistance for external tertiary studies related to promotional opportunities.
