Principal Scientist (Three positions available)

Purpose of the Role
The purpose of this position is to lead and undertake the research projects focusing on analysis and generation of climate information relevant to appropriate responses to climate change and climate variability in Queensland. The position will initiate and provide specialised data analysis supporting research in the areas of climate modelling, and analysis of climate change to support climate science activities and priorities within the government. The position will support the Queensland Climate Change Centre of Excellence (QCCCE) to ensure that the best climate science is available to inform Queensland Government programs, policies and initiatives.
Key Duties
- Provide advice on and build knowledge in the areas of climate system science, including modelling, analysis and diagnostics of climate variability and change, and climate forecast systems to influence strategic and operational planning.
- Initiate, lead and participate in specialised modelling and analyses of climate datasets to derive climate information contributing to the advancement of knowledge of climate change affecting Queensland.
- Initiate, lead and participate in innovative climate research projects focusing on investigation of drivers and mechanisms of climate change and variability in Queensland, including statistical and dynamical downscaling, climate extremes and generation of climate change scenarios.
- Lead and direct construction of high resolution datasets using output from global and regional climate models, including dynamical downscaling and/or statistical downscaling.
- Develop scientific software tools, and use commercial and open source software tools, to analyse a range climate datasets.
- Produce high quality technical and software documentation, project reports and scientific papers for refereed journals.
- Assist and provide specialised advice to other scientific staff as required.
