What Does a Communication Technician Do?
Telstra's Network Construction - Is a group within Telstra that install all the new technology that is in both small and large telephone exchanges throughout your state. This role is predominately commissioning (installing) and decomissioning (pulling out) equipment from exchanges, mobile sites and Telstra's customers sites. They construct equipment racks, work on mobile towers, work with optical fibre and work for Telstra's small and large business customers. The traineeship position is for 9 months.
You will be trained in:
- Building equipmnet racks to design diagrams - Building equipment racks for both small and large telephone exchanges to specified design diagrams
- Working to design packs - Completing tasks from start to finsish to work instructions from design packs
- Wireless - Working on the Next G Mobile phone network installing equipment and testing
- Equipment - Using a variety of tools from hand and power tools to clomplex testing equipment
- Optical Fibre - Installing fibre optics to equipment and testing the integrity
What Training will I get?
Off the Job Training
- You will be required to attend Qualification Based Training which is delivered in "classroom blocks" twice a year for a period of 3 weeks each time
- 2 weeks of Telstra specific training frollowing from the 3 weeks Qualification Based Training
- First block training will be on commencement - prior to commencing in the field, 5 weeks total
- Second block of training will be approximately 6 months later
- Training will take place in a central location
- Travelling to and from the training venue, and accommodation is your responsibility (there may be government assistance for travel and accommodation from regional areas)
- Training will be delivered by a Training Provider, nominated by Excelior, who will provide you the underpinning knowledge and skills required to gain your qualification. This includes gaining both theory and practicial experience in a classroom environment. Ie cable jointing, installing telecommunication services to a building, locating, diagnosing and fixing faults
- You will obtain a Nationally Recognised Qualification (Certificate II in Telecommunications)
- You will obtain an Open Registration Licence upon completion of Certificate II in Telecommunications
On the Job Training
- You will be provided with a mentor - a qualified Telecommunications Technician throughout your traineeship.
- The role of the mentor is to guide, explain and support you and provide you on the job training, for you to gain the necessary skills and experience to become a qualified technician
- You will be:
- Hands on, using power tools, cables, specialist equipment, going up ladders and in manholes
- Running cables, making joints, repair networks, running telecommunication services to a building, testing, diagnosing and fixing faults
- Provided with a uniform, PPE and a basic tool kit
- You will be required to complete a Monthly Activity Form, which outlines the tasks you completed throughout the month, that is validated by your mentor and assit in gaining your Nationally Recognised Qualification
- Telstra will also provide you ongoing training specific to their business throughout the traineeship
