Around the World We're a leading independent power generation company with interests in 34 power stations across 15 countries. We own one of our industry's most geographically diverse asset portfolios, which can generate enough power to light 220 million light bulbs at any one time.
We generate electricity from gas, oil, coal and renewable energy sources. We also maximise value through complementary activities that include coal mining, transporting gas by pipeline, desalinating water and providing steam for district heating systems.
Some of our power is sold to customers through competitive merchant markets. The rest is sold to single customers under long-term power purchase agreements.
In Australia We're Australia's largest private electricity generation company with six wind, gas, distillate and coal fired power stations across Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. We also retail electricity, with plans to expand and diversify our customer portfolio.
Our Aim We aim to maintain a balanced portfolio of assets in terms of fuel diversity, dispatch type, geographical spread and participation in both merchant markets and long-term contracts. We have the people, resources and determination to deliver benefits for all stakeholders.
Our Ethics Electricity is a unique product that can enhance the quality of life for people throughout the world. With this power comes responsibility. For us, it means protecting our employees, the environment and the host communities who trust us to do our job safely and efficiently.
The Environment Environmental care is integral to all our operations. New initiatives range from developing our first wind farm in Australia to increasing our capability to burn more environmentally friendly fuels in our UK coal-fired power station.
In 1997, our Hazelwood Power Station was one of the first signatories to the Commonwealth Government's Greenhouse Challenge program (predating the Kyoto Protocol). The station is now well into a seven-year $37M program to reduce greenhouse emissions through plant improvements and abatement activities.
Our People As we operate in an increasingly complex business environment, we place a high priority on the recruitment, retention and training of staff at all levels.
We have an incentive-weighted compensation scheme. Annual targets are set for all staff, calibrated to ensure they can attain them. We promote and facilitate internal and external seminars, personal development plans, and encourage staff to join relevant professional organisations.
Clear communication with all staff is critical to enhance commercial awareness throughout our business. Corporate publications, our website and intranet, briefings from executive management and team briefings all promote an understanding of our strategy and policies, as well as holding regular Global Employee Forums around the world.
Electricity is the same wherever it's generated. But the people who produce it for us vary in race, colour, religion, marital status, sexual orientation and age. We believe in fairness and equal opportunities for all employees and applicants, both from a sense of social responsibility and because it makes sound business sense to benefit from the wide-ranging knowledge and experience of individuals in all sectors of society.
