Western District Health Service is a multi-campus facility providing a broad range of hospital and community-based health services to the Western District of Victoria. Based in Hamilton, it includes Hamilton Base Hospital, Coleraine and Penshurst hospitals and aged care facilities. The entity provides 96 acute, 170 high and low level aged care beds, and an A&E department.
Hamilton Base Hospital is a modern hospital affiliated with St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne and Barwon Health in Geelong. Servicing a sub-regional population of 40,000, the medical facility includes 18 acute medical beds and a four-bed critical care unit. Other facilities include surgical, paediatric and gynaecology wards, a modern obstetric unit, two operating theatres, a day procedure unit, renal dialysis unit, chemotherapy unit and sleep studies laboratory. There is a simulation centre, a library with online services, an electro diagnostic facility, extensive on site medical imaging and pathology services, and a state of the art education centre with video conferencing. Last year Hamilton Base Hospital handled approximately 7,000 admissions, 3,000 operations, 220 deliveries and 4,500 emergency presentations. There is facility to consult in Casterton, Portland, Mount Gambier and Ararat.
Hamilton Base Hospital’s senior medical staff includes four physicians, three general surgeons, one anaesthetist (plus two GP anaesthetists), two ENT surgeons and one obstetrician (plus three GP obstetricians). Further specialist support is available from visiting subspecialty surgeons, a neurologist and a dermatologist.
Western District Health Service is affiliated with Flinders University and Greater Green Triangle’s Department of Rural Health. Hamilton Base Hospital consultants and VMOs participate in the teaching of 3rd and 4th year medical students, RMOs and registrars. Western District Health Service is recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for both basic and advanced physician training.
Continuing medical education is provided with weekly pathology, x-ray and clinical presentations on site and through ready access to teleconferencing at the Education Centre.
Hamilton is in the Western District of Victoria, a mainly farming area 3 ½ hours from Melbourne. There is a wide variety of local and "chain" stores, as well as banks, supermarkets, a performing arts centre and cinema. Hamilton has an excellent range of primary and secondary schools, both private and state, as well as TAFE and RMIT campuses.
Hamilton is ideally placed to access the Coonawarra wine district, the Grampians National Parks and is less than one hour from the coastal cities of Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Portland.
Western District Health Service now wishes to recruit a suitably qualified general physician to replace a retiring physician.
Applications from physicians with or without subspecialty interests would be welcome. Applicants should have a primary medical qualification registered or registrable in Victoria, Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (or postgraduate clinical training, qualifications and experience in Internal Medicine which meet the College’s requirements for appointment to this position) and appropriate specialist experience.
