About Us
The City of Melbourne is recognised locally, nationally and globally as a leader in many fields of local government. We challenge ourselves to remain at the leading edge. Melbourne is Australia's second largest city and is arguably the commercial and financial centre of the nation. The City has many features to offer its 55,000 residents and 400,000 workers, shoppers and visitors. It is renowned for its parks and gardens; the cultural, sporting and recreation activities are second to none; public transport is good and the community services are excellent.
With exciting internationally recognised projects such as the development of Federation Square, the creation of Birrarung Marr (Melbourne's first park in 100 years) and the hosting of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, we are well positioned to build on our reputation of excellence and that of an employer of choice.
The City of Melbourne is a dynamic organisation. We promote high standards of accountability, and a culture that values excellent service, innovation, continuous improvement and the contribution of its people. These values also guide the way we do business in all activities and services for the benefit of the community.
The Council is the guardian and administrator of the City of Melbourne. The Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor and seven Councillors represent the entire City area. The Council has a local, national and international role in stimulating and shaping Melbourne as the 'world's most liveable city'.
