Canterbury City is a local government area located 17 kilometres south-west of the centre of Sydney. It was first proclaimed as a municipality on 17th March 1879. The city covers an area of 33.4 sq. km and has 16 suburbs within its boundaries.

The first land grand in Canterbury was made to the Reverend Richard Johnson in 1793, and on November 16th 1993, two hundred years after this grant was made, Canterbury was proclaimed a City by His Excellency the Governor of NSW, Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair AC.
