As the employer of choice for teachers, the NSW Department of Education and Training has more than 2,200 public schools across NSW, 738,000 students and 80,000 permanent, temporary and casual teaching staff. We can offer you employment flexibility and unparalleled career opportunities in your chosen profession.

Opportunities in our public schools are open to both internal and external applicants, which means a whole new world of career opportunities for existing and aspiring school leaders. It's a great opportunity to join forces with one of the finest education providers in the southern hemisphere.

OUR SCHOOLS

At Kindergarten to year 6 (K-6) level, there are more than 1,620 primary schools, including a number of separate infants schools for Kindergarten to year 2 (K-2) children. Around 100 preschools offer educational programs for children aged 3-5 years. 74 of our primary schools have opportunity classes for academically gifted and talented children in Years 5 and 6.

At secondary level, more than 390 secondary schools provide a broad range of quality education for students in Years 7-12. There are selective high schools (including four agricultural high schools) for high achieving, academically talented students; technology high schools and sports high schools; senior high schools (catering for Years 11 and 12 students), languages high schools (providing specialist language education combined with core-curriculum studies), and creative and performing arts high schools.

One of our most successful initiatives has been the establishment of multi-campus colleges and senior high schools. Located throughout the State, these colleges offer a wide range of options for students, and a specialised focus that enables us to effectively target the needs of each particular student group, from middle to senior schooling.

Other schools that form part of our statewide network include 67 central schools and 7 community schools, providing comprehensive education from K-12 in a single-school setting; more than 110 schools for specific purposes, offering a specialised educational setting for students with special needs; 17 distance education centres, catering for the educational needs of isolated students; 23 environmental education centres, supporting schools in providing environmental education programs and field study activities and 10 hospital schools, providing educational services for inpatient students.

BENEFITS AND INCENTIVES

Teachers in NSW public schools enjoy some of the highest salaries of any education system in Australia. From January 2008, a four year trained teacher will commence on a salary of $50,522 per annum. After each year of permanent teaching service (or 203 days of casual teaching), our teachers “step up” a level on the salary scale, until they reach Step 13, $75,352.

Assistant principals, the first promotional level in primary schools, are paid a salary of $82,848, while a principal of a large high school, can be paid a salary of up to $129,506 plus additional amounts for superannuation and leave loading.

As a teacher with us you'll enjoy excellent holiday and leave conditions. In addition to school holidays, leave entitlements include leave without pay (full time and part time), maternity and parental leave, long service leave, carers leave and study leave. More information is outlined on our website at www.det.nsw.edu.au/employment .

Once you become a teacher in NSW public schools you can take advantage of the many training and development opportunities available. Our newly employed teachers benefit from induction programs and networking opportunities early in their appointment. Common practice involves multi-stage induction programs held in each term of the first year of appointment, the support of in-school or regional mentors, training in meeting the requirements set down by the NSW Institute of Teachers and the opportunity to participate in a wide range of general professional learning opportunities, ranging from classroom technology applications to behaviour management. You can also retrain in a subject area that requires more teachers.

CASUAL AND TEMPORARY TEACHING

Casual and temporary employment is a preferred option for teachers wanting flexibility in order to balance work and family responsibilities. For teachers awaiting permanent appointment, casual and temporary employment provides great opportunities to further develop professional skills.

Other benefits include flexible hours, opportunities to travel throughout New South Wales, experiencing teaching in other parts of the curriculum and enjoying different daily experiences.

The Teacher Employment Priority Scheme (TEPS) provides benefits that may assist teachers in gaining an offer of permanent employment more quickly. Depending on the schools in which you work, your priority date for permanent employment may be accelerated by up to 18 months for every 50 days of casual or temporary service in New South Wales public schools. Further details about TEPS is available https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/employment/recruit/casualteachers/teps.htm

In addition, temporary teachers may benefit from locality and climate allowances in some areas, a range of leave options and vacation pay.

MOVE YOUR CAREER FORWARD

Promotion within NSW public schools is on the basis of merit. You can apply for promotion to advertised positions in schools following two years of permanent service. Teachers can also apply for positions in a variety of specialist or management positions within schools, offices and state office directorates.

Our teachers enjoy access to diverse career pathways moving in and out of the school setting in a range of roles during their careers. School leaders contribute to the development of programs in a range of areas at local, regional and state level based on best practice developed at their own schools. Many executive staff choose to further contribute through senior management roles in non-school based positions in areas such as curriculum, student services or school improvement.

ENJOY A COUNTRY CAREER

If you choose to work in certain rural locations, there are even more rewarding opportunities available to you. Apart from extra incentives and benefits that can increase your annual remuneration by thousands of dollars, teaching in country locations has provided a springboard for further career progression for many teachers.

It is not just the attraction of a country lifestyle that draws them, but also the opportunity to enjoy a number of benefits and incentives not available in city schools.

Depending on the location and position, these can include the provision of a principal's residence; a rental subsidy of 70 to 90 percent; a principal's expense allowance; a range of allowances to compensate for distance, isolation or climate; allowances for your dependants; additional training and development opportunities and an extra week of summer vacation.

Our online benefits calculator can provide you with further information about which benefits apply to which schools. Go to www.teach.nsw.edu.au/calculator .

For some, the opportunities for further promotion are fast-tracked, as outstanding qualities of leadership and management are quick to be recognised in smaller-school settings.
